LOOK AT ME!

The main component of this necklace is the absolutely wonderful piece of rusted steel. I found it exactly as you see it here. When I assembled the necklace, I added the piece of mirror behind the steel. It is on a braided, waxed cord. The short bit of chain allows it to go from 18" to 21" long. The base length can be shortened.

Materials: Sterling, rusted steel, mirror, cord

FIRE IN THE OKANOGAN

This is a recap of the section (same name) on my website - I will be replacing that section with new work.

In 2015 there was a terrible forrest fire in the Okanogan area of Washington state. My very dear friend lost her home in that fire. I went with her to see what it all looked like. It was like we had stepped into an alien landscape. The fire was so intense that it not only burned the trees but burned the roots of the tree. There were holes where the trees had been and there was still smoke coming out of it. I gathered assorted twigs and bits of the house and took them home with me.

The necklace that I created from some of the glass was a turning point for me. I was making jewelry that told the story of total devastation. "Perfect" was never a very big word in my vocabulary but it pretty much disappeared at this point in my artistic career.

THE HOUSE

The neckpiece has a piece of glass from the debris of the house. The form is a house in parts - not functional. The color on the piece is left as it was when all soldering was finished. All the parts are a little off - not perfect. As if, the neckpiece itself had been through the fire - well, in a way - it has. Just a different fire.

BURNED TWIG

A burned twig is held in a box. A piece of wearable evidence of the fire.

BROKEN GLASS

A piece of glass, with color both from the fire and the torch.

TIME and PLACE

Bill and I lived in Germany for a year. He was working in a lab doing research and I found a studio to share with a German jeweler. It was an important year in my artistic career. I guess you might say I went to graduate school. My studio partner, Andrea Wipperman, had graduated from the school that was in the same town as our studio. I learned, first hand, about getting an idea and instead of being satisfied - to question ....what else could you do? And ask again, and again. It has been a very important piece of my artistic development.

I found myself thinking about TIME - which has been a theme in my work before. With this work I was focused on the time that Bill and I spent living in Germany. What we learned, the experiences we had - what it is like to put yourself in a new environment.

For one month of the year, we lived outside of a small village - Riccodariggi - in Tuscany. We rented a charming cottage a mile from the 14th century hill-top village. Most days we took a walk that we found in a book called "Walks in Tuscany"!! The roads/paths were paved with the debris from the village - bits of broken pottery, tile, etc. I returned home each day with my pockets bulging.

The PLACES - the villages were connected by roads and railways. I used the pieces that I had gathered as the villages and put on a short bit of the road or railway.
